Save our market
So I was walking to work, passing the farmers market at UN Plaza last Wednesday; I noticed a table with a sign, “Save our farmers market,” on top of it. Here’s the flyer they were passing out. Apparently, our friends at City Hall is mulling taking over the Heart of the City Farmer’s Market operation that’s been running independently for over 25 years. The rumor is that the City wants to double the rental fees for a farmer’s market that serves locally grown produce to mainly nearby low income population. I have written about 3 different food vendors in my blog here and had always enjoyed buying fresh, local produce at a very reasonable price here; so I kind of take this issue personally.
Now, we are talking about a bureaucracy that can’t balance its own budget, pays six-figure salary to over 8,000 employees, including transit operators and plumbers. By taking over the operation and adding more bureaucratic red tapes to doing business here, the goods will likely be priced out for current patrons. It sure will give the City reasons to add more $100,000 paper pushers to its payroll. A word of advice to the City: If it ain’t broke, don’t come and fu*k it up.
